How To Get Rid Of Yellow Hair?

Posted by Sandeep Kumar on August 9, 2010

Some people may be tempted to ask why yellow hair is a problem. After all, there are many people in the world who have light-colored hair – blond, wheat straw etc. But this is a slightly different situation. If you have discoloration in your hair and that color is really yellow you will need to know the best way to get rid of it.

People may experience a yellowing of their hair because they use water that contains strong minerals and chemicals that change the hair pigment. If your water is extremely “hard” such as water from a ground well, you can treat the water with tablets that will eliminate much of this problem.

If you use too much of a product meant for styling or shaping your hair you might contribute to the problem of yellow hair. If your natural color is a certain shade of brown/red and you use too much peroxide, you could change the color to an orange shade or give it a yellow tint. If hair treatment products are causing the problem you should change brands or treatment type.

Good Old Vinegar
For centuries people have know how to use household vinegar for cleaning, clearing up and changing things in various situations. You might be able to restore some of your natural hair color with vinegar. If you notice that your hair is changing to a yellowish color you can mix some vinegar and water and use it as a rinse. This solution will dry the scalp and may damage the hair. But give it a try then rinse your hair again with water.

Try to remove traces of chemicals and/or minerals with retail shampoos and conditioners. A thorough washing of the head and scalp may be necessary to get rid of yellow hair. Once this is accomplished you will have to change your hair treatments and even change the way you wash your hair (if water is the problem).

There is one other cause that you may not be able to do much about. If your hair color is of a certain shade and the sun bleaches some places to a yellow tint, you may have to treat specific spots on your head or you may have to stay out of the sun.

Think About Iron
Yellow HairWe’re not talking about the iron you use to press your clothes. We are going to consider the chemical element iron. Yellow hair may be caused by the presence of iron in the body. You may not be able to change the iron level in your system but you could change the color of your hair slightly with some professional help and quality hair products.

Iron may be one of the primary culprits in ground water that is used for washing your hair. It may be necessary to use commercial hair toning products or to try a natural treatment that will balance the iron content in your hair and scalp. Vinegar was mentioned at the beginning of this article for a reason. The acid content of vinegar seems to be just about right for making slight changes in hair color.
